The BIS Parent and Teacher Association helped the school welcome in the Chinese Year of the Snake with a festive Chinese cultural afternoon held in and around the BIS World Theatre.
The afternoon started with a celebration of Chinese traditional dances and martial arts. This included impressive Lion and Dragon dances, which are usually performed by troupes at Chinese New Year celebrations. It also included displays of Taekwondo from BIS students, and a dramatic Wushu performance from Harmoni Wushu Indonesia. The entertainment was rounded off in-style with a colourful firework spectacular that lit up the sky above the school.
Any New Year celebration would not be complete without a little taste of China. Therefore the Theatre's foyer and the neighbouring quadrangle were transformed into a mini China-Town, with fiery-red and gold decorations (thanks to the PTA members), and a range of stalls from Din Tai Fung, i-Rice and Annapurna all providing some Chinese cuisine. The ever-popular Java Beer Company was on hand to provide some light refreshment with tasty brews, and the PTA cocktails and mocktails were in high demand.
The event was organised and coordinated by BIS PTA members, especially the CNY sub committee, with a huge amount of support as always from BIS staff and parents. Many thanks to all those who helped in any way to make the event such a success, your hard work and creativity are greatly appreciated. And finally a very big thank you to all the parents, staff and students who came along to enjoy the day, marking this important event in the Chinese calendar and helping to raise funds for local charities.
The BIS PTA are now hard at work planning for their next big event, the Exciting Indonesia Country Fair which is scheduled for Sunday, 2 June 2013.
