Despite being the penultimate week of the acedemic year, there is no slowing down in Year 5! The children have formed mini enterprise groups to design and make their own brand of sweets. After some fun taste-testing, analysing packaging and studying recipes, small groups have got down to business and come up with their own recipes and branding concepts.

Ways to help at home:

Why not try an experiment of your own at home? Try making plastic! This is an irreversible reaction between milk and vinegar. Warm about a pint of whole milk and add 2 tablespoons of white vinegar to it. The milk immediately curdles. Strain the solid curds from the liquid whey. Place the curds on kitchen paper to allow it to cool and dry. Your child can then handle it, put it in a mould or shape it. This will dry firm overnight if kept in a warm place, become very hard in time and can be painted and varnished. Is there any evidence a change is happening? Can your child explain what is happening?

Dear Parents

Last week was a short 3 day week but we packed a lot in and have continued to do so this week!

In Literacy we have continued our work on characters, settings and the “problem” and “resolution.” Children are becoming confident at using drama to retell stories and have enjoyed working with a partner to create a verbal fantasy story that they have shared with the class. We have had a lot of risk takers this week! We also wrote an independent fantasy story of our own and tried to include a problem and a resolution.

Myths and Legend writing in the Shark Class.
Focus for Learning:

This is what we are learning next week

Literacy

We will watch a selection of Myths and Legends on DVD and retell these stories with a partner. Using websites which allow children to choose characters and settings, to make up a Myth or Legend or Monsters of their own.

Mathematics

We will continue to work with a partner to solve and make up number problems using practical materials and diagrams to help us. We will also revise some of the concepts that we have covered this year that we feel children need more experience with.

ICT

Using 2simple software to create a character and a setting that can be then used for a verbal fantasy or Myth and Legend story.

IPC

The Stories people tell – Myths, Legends and Fables. Storytelling will continue. Using a variety of materials and processes to create Greek pots or dream catchers. Being able to review and comment on our work and that of others.

SEAL

Changes. Thinking about how Year 2 may be different. Visiting the Year 2 environment.

Ways to help at home:

Next week, as part of our assembly, we will hold our (student only) Year 1 Talent Show and children will present their “talent” to the year group. Children have been showing their “talent” to their class this week and your child’s teacher will inform you if your child has been voted by their class to be part of the talent show next week. A lot of great talent has been heard and seen in the Year 1 pod this week!

Additionally, next Thursday Year 1 children will have a party and disco. Children can wear party clothes and you will have received a note, detailing the food you have been asked to provide for your child’s class.

On Friday, children may come to school in clothes of their house colour. There will be no charge for this day.

Finally, as next week is the last week of this term, and academic year, we will send books and any remaining work home. It is really helpful if you send a plastic bag for your child bring these home in.

Some ways to help at home:

Looking at halves and quarters in the kitchen, cutting a pizza, a banana or a sandwich into half and then quarter. Giving your child an even amount of objects and asking them to find half and then a quarter.

Continue to help your child to learn how to read and spell words from the 100 High Frequency Words list which was sent home last week. When your child can do this, try asking them to write these words in sentences.

Read more stories together, particularly Myths, Legends and Fables. Ask your child to identify what the problem in the story is and how that problem was resolved.

Make up verbal fantasy stories together, focusing on the problem and the resolution.

Talk to your child about how he or she feels about moving on to Year Two.

PLEASE NOTE: As Year 1 students complete their BIS Learner Profiles (40 merit stickers for Bronze, 80 for Silver) they will receive a medal in the Year 1 assembly. Traditionally this assembly has been for students only. However, this year we have invited parents to come and see their children receive their medal (a 2-3 minute procedure at the beginning of the assembly) and then leave the assembly. Only parents of the students receiving the medal should attend the assembly for the first 2-3 minutes and then leave. Parents should not feel any obligation to come, as we do take a group photo of all medal recipients and put it in the newsletter. It will be the responsibility of the student to let their parents know if they have completed their BIS Learner Profile. For those who finish their BIS Learner Profile on a Friday, it will be impossible for parents to be informed and attend the assembly. Parents in this situation are encouraged to celebrate with their child when they come home.

The summer break is a good opportunity to relax reading a good book on a daily basis.  It is also a good time to practise multiplication facts.  The children will need to be able to rapidly recall their times tables.  As previously mentioned please download the free version to 'Timez Attack'. It is an excellent interactive game designed to help children learn their tables quickly.  The beauty of the game is the fact that it makes memorizing tables fun!

Snakes

The last week in Year 2 for the Snakes. What an amazing and fulfilling year it has been. Watching these children develop through Year 1 and then guiding their progress in Year 2 has been a real privilege. Next week we will be focussing on the final preparations for Year 3. We will be visiting the ‘Subway Breeze’ kiosk on Friday. We will be finishing our transition booklets ready for our new teachers. On Wednesday we will be meeting our new teachers and discovering who will be in our classes in Year 3. On Thursday we have our Year 2 end of year party. Please remember to send your child in mufti clothes, but also with their swimming kit as normal. Friday is house colours Mufti, there is no charge for any mufti next week. All through the week we will be preparing for our circus exit point, which should be something worth waiting for.

Foxes

The Foxes can hardly believe how quickly the academic year has passed by. We will spend next week celebrating our achievements during the year and looking forward to the challenges and new experiences Year 3 offers. After some very successful auditions, the final week of term will begin with the Talent Show Assembly. The children will continue with their Year 2 to Year 3 transition programme on Tuesday by visiting the Subway Breeze cafe to purchase their own lunch using their swipe cards. On Wednesday children will meet their new teachers and find out their new class groups. Then on Thursday children will enjoy a class party and disco to mark the end of the year. On Friday, it is house colours mufti no charge. In between all these exciting activities, the children will be writing their own Horrid Henry stories, revisiting key calculation skills, designing and making their own juggling bean bags and creating their very own circus act. A busy final week to end a very busy and successful year!

Ways to help at home:

Over the summer break, the best thing that you can do for your child is maintain the skills they have acquired this year. Give them a book with lined pages so they can keep a diary of their holiday time. Challenge them to verbal timetables and mental Maths tests and keep scores, see if they can improve their records. Let them help you solve everyday problems such as how to organise the day. Give them the chance to experience as many new and exciting things as possible and share their excitement of new experiences. Encourage them to interact with different friends, and allow them to play sports and be active. Children thrive on new experiences and enjoy challenging themselves. Have fun!

Stars of the week:

This is what we are learning next week

Mice

In our three day week we have a lot to fit in. We will be making the juggling bean sacks that we designed this week. We will be considering whether we should include animals in our circus and the ethical issues around this. In Literacy we will be starting to plan our stories with Horrid Henry characters. We will be practising writing quickly and using speech marks to punctuate conversations. In Maths we will be looking at the various methods for solving different number calculations including number lines and vertical methods. In ICT we will be composing sounds to use as background music for our circus. Remember, Thursday and Friday are no school days!

Gruffaloes

Next week is a short week, but we have a lot in store! In Literacy lessons, we are going to look at the horrid motives Horrid Henry has and how it affects the story. But we will use our imaginations to consider how characters can change in a story...perhaps Henry will turn out to be a good boy! We are going to practise writing dialogue using speech marks - very grown up! We shall continue looking at Forces, in particular balancing acts at the circus. and in Maths, our focus is on right angles and we will carry on with telling the time.

Owls

Next week in Literacy we will be starting to think about and plan our own Horrid Henry stories. In Maths we will be looking at doubles and halves of numbers and we will use this to help us find fractions of numbers. We will also be looking at fractions of shapes and some equivalent fractions. In IPC we will be finishing our bean bags and start to investigate different forces. Remember next week is a short week and there is no school on Thursday or Friday. Enjoy the long weekend!

Snakes

Only three days this week but a lot to do. We will be continuing to build on our circus stories adding characters, new description and dialogue. We will be planning our circus technological novelty (pull, squeeze, push or balance) and thinking of the resources from home we might need to collect over the long weekend. We will be spending some time with the Year 1 Snakes planning our joint teddy bear’s picnic. We will be looking at division and fractions of a number and catching up on some measurement activities.

Foxes

The Foxes are going to have a busy three day week with a geographical focus. They will be learning to interpret and make both large scale and small scale maps. They will be plotting major international circuses on a world map and will later make an internal map of the layout of their brilliant Roman circus models. In Literacy, will be practicing describing exciting settings and then will consider how a character can change as the plot of a story progresses. In Mathematics, we will be revisiting fractions and will be considering some two-step mathematical word problems.

Ways to help at home:

During this IPC topic the children will be investigating forces. Here is a link to some BBC activities which use knowledge of different forces: http://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/ks1/science/forces/play/

We will be looking balancing and the part that plays in different circus acts. At home try balancing different objects, looking for their centre of gravity and their balancing point. Are bigger objects easier to balance that smaller ones? What about heavier objects? Does it make any difference?

Stars of the week:

Umar - Balanced. A super effort joining in on sports day. Well done!

Josiah - Knowledgeable. Josiah saw the patterns in the 9 times table this week, and also began on the 9 division table!

Yuv for an imaginative and well written story about running away to the circus.

Arturo for a splendid performance on sports day.

Harsheen - Reflective - for excellent problem solving skills in our morning Maths sessions.

Daphne - Balanced - for a superb effort in our sports day this week.

Alannah was an inquirer. She researched how circuses have changed over time with interest.

Phillip was a thinker. He thought of some brilliant design features for his model Roman circus.

Lizzie - Risk Taker - for working so well independently.

Lini - Inquirer - for asking some interesting questions in our IPC discussions.
